Little Mill Creek: Brentwood to 87th Street
Nearly 100 residents attended a City of Lenexa-sponsored block party on June 16, 2008 to celebrate a successful end to the $8 million Little Mill Creek stream stabilization and flood control project in their neighborhood.
The Brentwood stream reach of Little Mill Creek, like many urban streams, has been a constant source of frustration over the past 20 years with severe bank erosion as well as home and street flooding. To correct the problems caused by the stream, Lenexa's Rain to Recreation stormwater program partnered with Johnson County Stormwater Management Advisory Council (SMAC) to design and construct a project to improve safety, protect citizens’ homes and property from flooding, reduce street flooding, and protect public utilities and property from damage due to erosion. The agencies chose CDM as the project’s designer and contractor.
Now that the project is finished, residents can enjoy the numerous structural and aesthetic improvements that were made to the ¾-mile section of Little Mill Creek from Brentwood Drive to 87th Street Parkway. Benefits to the neighborhood include a new and improved storm drainage system, several new bridges and sidewalks, a stable stream connecting the neighborhood, and value-added features such as a beautiful rock wall-lined streamway and professional landscaping.
