Stormdrain Marking Event and Earth Day Celebration
On Saturday morning April 17, 2004, Mayor Mike Boehm, EPA Region 7 representative Julie Elfving and watershed planner Laura Turnbull greeted 50 volunteers Lenexa’s Earth Day celebration and the City’s sixth stormdrain marking event. Volunteers included scout leader David Bryant, City Clerk, with a large number of his Cub Scouts, a group of high school students from Shawnee Mission West, additional Girl and Boy Scouts Troops, and Watershed’s favorite Lenexa citizens, the Pickett family. This event focused on the Falcon development areas, west of Woodland Rd. Volunteer teams marked a total of 330 storm drains with our permanent markers, which now include the “no dumping” message in Spanish. The volunteer teams also delivered approximately 1,000 educational flyers to adjacent residences.
We extend a special thanks to Mayor Boehm and Julie Elfving for providing an educational and inspiring greeting.
This year’s planning and event day team consisted of veteran staff participants, Pat Mahoney, Jim Melvin, Doug Norsby, Tom Jacobs, Mike Beezhold, Ed McKechnie, Kathy McCabe, Laura Turnbull and newcomer, Justin Unger. Thanks to all staff for their contributions to another successful event.
As a follow-up event, in conjunction with Take Your Child to Work Day, Lenexa staff children Sarah Harrison, Austin Simms, Kayla Duran, Erin Hauber, Phil and Susan Kroh teamed up with staff members Pat Mahoney, Justin Unger and Laura Turnbull to mark drains and distribute flyers in the eastern half of the Parkhurst development. These kids marked 33 stormdrains and distributed 138 flyers. Thanks to the parents and kids that participated in this special day.
