completed in the spring of 2003, the Flat Rock Creek project
stabilized the eroding streambanks and streambed while addressing
flooding issues in the neighborhood. The Flat Rock Creek
stream restoration project located at 103 rd Street and
Hauser behind the community swimming pool was the first
attempt in the City to apply "green" technologies
in the stabilization of a highly urbanized stream. The support
of the neighborhood allowed the City to incorporate natural
stream restoration applications particularly the planting
of native grasses and wildflowers. Native vegetation is
well suited for stabilization projects where their deep
root growth helps stabilize the streambanks while improving
water quality and providing wildlife habitat with an aesthetic
beauty that only mother-nature can provide.
Flat Rock Creek was recognized by the Kansas
City Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA)
with a Project of the Year (2002) award in the category
of Environment.
