The city held
two ceremonies: a "Fill the Lake" event at the
recently completed Mize Lake, located on Mize Boulevard
near K-10 Highway, and a ground breaking event for Lake
Lenexa, which will be built at Monticello Road between 83rd
Street and Prairie Star Parkway.
Lake Lenexa , the city's premier
Rain to Recreation lake will be nearly 35 acres nestled
in 240 acres of parkland that includes preserved woodlands
and streamways. This project will include three wetlands,
trails, a boat ramp for small, non-motorized boats, boardwalks
and docks, stairs to the waters edge providing access to
fishing spots and wildlife habitats, picnic shelters and
restrooms, and a future amphitheater. Three miles of trails
connect the lake to surrounding neighborhoods following
protected streamways. The architecturally unique dam and
spillway will be a visitation destination with cascading
pools and a fountain that may be viewed atop a pedestrian
bridge spanning the spillway. The lake and park amenities
should be completed in the summer of 2006.
This state of the art project
successfully delivers the Rain to Recreation Programs's
goals of flood protection, natural stream preservation,
improved water quality and new recreational and educational
opportunities. Through this project, stormwater is transformed
from a potential nuisance as damaging runoff into an environmental
and community asset, solidly delivering Rain to Recreation...a
promise kept.
