Lenexa celebrated progress in June on two new lakes, which are part of the city's Rain to Recreation program to reduce flooding, protect water quality and natural habitat, and provide recreational and educational opportunities.

The city held two ceremonies: a "Fill the Lake" event at the recently completed Mize Lake, located on Mize Boulevard near K-10 Highway, and a ground breaking event for Lake Lenexa, which will be built at Monticello Road between 83rd Street and Prairie Star Parkway.

The lake at Mize Boulevard is filling up with water. One of Lenexa's Rain to Recreation projects, the new seven-acre lake will help reduce flooding as the area continues to develop, and it will offer passive recreational opportunities such as fishing, bird watching, leisure walking, and wildlife viewing.

In conjunction with the construction of the lake, Mize Boulevard is being built to serve a dual purpose by functioning also as the dam of the lake. Elements of the project include the lake, wetlands and water quality features for lake longevity and stream protection, fish and wildlife structures, trails, protected forest, and native grass and wildflower plantings.
