Dog Swim

At the recent Dog Swim event held at Indian Trails Aquatic Center on Wednesday, September 8, Rain to Recreation greeted doggy guests and their owners with valuable information on pet waste and the ways in which, if not handled properly, it could pose serious danger to the environment.  Unlike human waste that is treated in waste treatment facilities, exposed pet waste washes directly into lakes and streams increasing the risk of transmitting diseases in contaminated water as well as harming wildlife nutrients and habitat.  To eliminate the threat of bacteria and parasites transmitted by your pet’s waste, follow these easy tips to become an environmentally friendly pet owner.

·         Pick up pet waste from your yard.  It is not a fertilizer and should not even be used as compost.

·         Carry disposable bags while walking your dog to pick up waste and deposit it in a nearby trash receptacle.  Carefully seal or tie the disposable bag to avoid spillage during trash collection.

·         Flush your pet’s waste down the toilet so that, like your own waste, it can be treated at a sewage treatment plant.

·         Bury pet waste in your yard, at least 12 inches deep and cover with at least eight inches of soil to let it decompose slowly.  Bury the waste in several different locations but keep it away from vegetable gardens.

Being an environmentally friendly pet owner ensures the safety and quality of your neighborhood for both you and your pet!

The Eco-Troubadour, Stan Slaughter, entertained and educated the students at Lenexa's Sunflower Elementary and Rosehill Elementary schools on Tuesday October 9, 2001. With demonstrations and songs like Rot and Roll, The Garbage Blues and the Recycle Shuffle, Stan increased awareness of ecological issues and presented alternatives to our through-away American lifestyle. The event was funded by KDHE's Solid Waste Program and coordinated through the City's Watershed Management Division.
